Ask a lactation advisor or your child’s physician for help if wanted — especially if every feeding is painful or your child is not gaining weight. Although your nipples may be tender for the first few weeks, breast-feeding isn’t supposed to harm. If you haven’t labored with a lactation advisor, ask your baby’s physician for a referral or check with the obstetrics department at a local hospital.
